Palos Heights, Illinois, July 29, 2013 – Homer Glen based Bret-Mar Landscape (www.bretmarlandscape.com) landscape architects and field personnel worked hard to rebuild the courtyard at Palos East Elementary. This activity was originally intended to kick off Bret-Mar’s service events for both Earth Day and the Professional Landcare Network’s Day of Service, but after discussing with the school both parties decided it would be more desirable to work in late summer. This way classes are not interrupted and staff is present to care for the new plants.
Palos East Elementary School in Palos Heights is home to at least five hundred students, educators, and staff. Three children of Bret-Mar owners Sharon and Kurt Marrin, residents of Palos Heights, also attended this school. Sharon shared, “It was a special place for our children and many memories are still cherished.” In 2001 Sharon and Kurt worked with the school district to develop a pond ecosystem for an open courtyard that resides outside many classroom and hallway windows.
Bret-Mar donated time and materials to freshen up the courtyard. The crew pulled weeds, pruned and trimmed existing plants, applied a fresh layer of mulch, and planted low maintenance perennials purchased by Palos East. A Maple tree was also donated and planted in honor and memory of Mrs. Creevy, a former educator and principal at Palos East. Ashley Marrin, Sharon and Kurt’s daughter, works in the family business and lead this project. “It was great to give back to the school which provided me with so many wonderful experiences. I hope the students and teachers are surprised by the courtyard when they walk through the halls and sit in the classrooms this fall. The courtyard is a unique place for learning and interacting. Before we even finished planting the perennials a bumble bee made a visit to collect pollen,” stated Ashley Marrin, Landscape Designer at Bret-Mar Landscape.
