Many Crab-Apples are susceptible to the Scab fungus Venturia inaequalis. Symptoms include brown spots about 1/4 inch in diameter on the leaves and fruits. Scab causes the leaves to drop prematurely and the fruits can even seem disfigured. It is possible that an imperfect stage of the fungus can over winter on the twig. NOW is the time to spray for scab! The spray must be done when the leaves are half grown even though signs are not noticeable until mid-summer. Contact your arborist for more information on how to treat your crab or call Bret-Mar Landscape for recommendations. 708-301-2225
