  1. Make sure you are working with a Landscape Architect! Designers who have a  degree in landscape architecture/design were trained for this diverse and challenging profession. “Landscape architecture draws upon a background in both the arts and sciences to engage in analyzing, planning, designing, managing, preserving and rehabilitating the land.” ASLA
  2. Look for licensure! Landscape architects are certified by the ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) through each state. To become accredited  in Illinois, landscape architects must work under the supervision of another registered landscape architect for two years and then pass the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E) PLANET and other organizations also have certification programs.
  3. Properly Insured! If not you could be liable for any accidents on your project site.

The risks of an unqualified landscaper include:

-Physical injury from slipping, tripping, or falling (due to poor construction or design)

-Costs associated with replacing or moving plants that were in the wrong space or inadequate

-Loss of property value due to inappropriate land planning and design

-Damage to surface and subsurface water quality from excessive runoff, flooding, and/or soil erosion

4. The landscape architect must understand your style and listen to what you need and is important to you.
