Tucker’s Plant of the Month: Thuja occidentalis ‘Techny’

Thuja occidentalis ‘Techny’ or commonly known as Techny Arborvitae is the ultimate screen or privacy plant. It is evergreen so it stays green all year long while growing in a tall and narrow habit which is great for along property lines to provide privacy without taking up a lot of space.

Light Requirement: Partial to full sun. (can survive in shade, but foliage will not be as dense)
Water Needs: Prefers moist/wet soil conditions over hot and dry. May need a little additional water during hot summer months
Size: Up to 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide. Will tolerate trimming or shaping to maintain smaller size
Landscape Uses: Great for property line privacy border, wet areas, to block cool north winds, hedge applications, or to screen utilities
Maintenance: Best time to prune is spring. Miracid granular fertilizer recommended

I enjoy Thuja occidentalis ‘Techny’ because the evergreen foliage is soft and feathery unlike most that tend to be prickly. It does a great job of screening the property lines in my yard so that I don’t bark at the neighbor when he is out working in the yard or entertaining guests. It also gives my parents privacy when they want to relax on the back patio and watch me play in the yard. Since it stays narrow and tall I don’t loose any of my open lawn space to chase rabbits, squirrels, and the occasional cat that roams into my yard. Also, with the holiday season arriving soon, it makes for a great plant to put Christmas lights on. Thuja occidentalis ‘Techny’ is one of the best types of Arborvitaes because it has one central leader so it has no risk of splitting when heavy snow or ice collects on it. It has a natural oval shape that blends nicely into the landscape whether is is formal or very natural.

If you are looking for privacy all season long this is the plant for you. Enjoy your landscape!
