Company History

The Beginning

Kurt and Sharon first met while studying Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After graduation, they each began their careers in the landscape industry, building a strong foundation of experience.

1985

In 1985, they took two big steps forward - marrying one another and founding Bret-Mar Landscape. The company’s early days were rooted in their home in Mt. Greenwood, where passion and hard work fueled steady growth.

1996

In 1996, Kurt and Sharon purchased a five-acre property in Homer Glen, which remains the heart of the business today. The farmhouse and surrounding land now serve as the company’s office, display gardens, and plant nursery.

2000s

In the early 2000s, their children, Ashley and Adam, joined the family business. With degrees in Landscape Architecture and Agricultural Systems Technology from South Dakota State University, they brought fresh energy and expertise.

TODAY

Today, Ashley and Adam proudly lead Bret-Mar Landscape, carrying forward their parents’ vision and celebrating 40 years of creating beautiful, lasting landscapes.

FAQs

    • A copy of your plat of survey is required for us to begin our design process. A plat of survey is a map of your property created by a licensed surveyor and in most cases is required for permits. It shows:

    • The exact property lines and boundaries

    • The location of your home, driveway, and many other structures in relation to the property lines

    • Measurements of your home which assists with layout of patios and landscape beds

    • It shows easements which have restrictions on where we can build

    • Inspiration photos including pinterest boards our houzz ideabooks

    • Consider other items such as favorite colors, favorite plants, and how you like to entertain

  • The design process typically takes several weeks and will fluctuate depending on the time of year. Spring tends to be the busiest time of year.


  • Yes, all of our designs are completed using a computer software program that develops 3D imagery and virtual walkthrough mode. Our presentation meeting for designs takes place in our office where client’s can take in their new design on large televisions and enjoy a stroll through our display gardens.


  • Yes, we are a second generation family business. Please take a moment to view our “about us page” to get to know the family!


  • Yes, landscape and hardscapeinstallations are overseen and completed by our in house team. This way we can control the quality of craftmanship and be certain the outcome exactly meets your desires and needs. Other partner contractors are brought in for specialty items only such as electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.


  • No, we do not charge for consultations or designs. Designs and perspective photos are not released until a commitment for installation has been made.


  • Yes, for all new customers we do have a minimum project size of $4,000.


  • Yes, we like to have a conversation up front about what you would like to invest in your home. Our job is to find that compromise between your desired investment and all the needs and wants that come with your vision of the landscape our outdoor space.


  • Yes, we have two options for maintenance services. First, we have an all-inclusive maintenance program that offers 3 to 8 visits per year. Second, we have single maintenance visits where customers can make a request as needed. Many client’s choose to do a spring clean-up visit to kick the season off.


  • Our hardscape base warranty is for a period of two years. Trees and shrubs are warrantied for one year with one replacement. Other products such as brick pavers & light fixtures have additional manufacturer warranties that will be disclosed on your individual proposal.
